Trips & Adventures

Outdoor Adventures provides a variety of outdoor trips, from day trips/clinics to weekend and week adventures, to the University of Utah community. Participants can expect to see activities such as rock climbing, canyoneering, mountain biking, backpacking, hiking, cross-country skiing, backcountry touring, ice climbing, whitewater rafting/kayaking, flatwater trips such as canoeing or SUPing, and much more. The trip leaders are in constant training to provide a safe and positive learning environment in which participants can develop their outdoor skills. 

The following information and trips are only for University of Utah undergraduate and graduate students and their guests. Trips are not available to the general public. Trips are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances including, but not limited to, permits and weather. Trips are available in the Fall and Spring semesters only.

CITY OF ROCKS WOMEN'S CLIMBING
City of Rocks is a mecca of climbing, just over the Utah/Idaho border in rural Idaho. Varnished and pocketed granite is the name of the game here. We’ll depart Friday evening and return Sunday evening after a weekend of rock climbing. This trip is recommended for beginner to intermediate climbers. No lead climbing by participants is allowed. We will be hiking into the climbing area with our equipment, so some athletic ability is recommended.

*This trip is only available for Backcountry Squatters* This trip is specifically for women and non-binary students who feel most comfortable in a female-centered space.
This trip is reated Class 2: perfect for beginners with moderate athletic ability who are ready to get outside.

9/15 - 9/17 RED CANYON RAFTING
Join OA for a beautiful raft along a stretch of the Green River coming out of Flaming Gorge Reservoir where you’ll see stunning red rock formations, sandy beaches, and desert mesas. There are many exciting, beginner-friendly rapids. This trip includes gear, transportation, and meals. We will meet at OA at 3PM on Friday and return to campus Sunday evening.
This trip is rated Class 2: perfect for beginners with moderate athletic ability who are ready to get outside. Moderate swimming ability is required.

9/29-10/1

MT. TIMPANOGOS BACKPACKING
Catch the sunrise at the summit of one of Utah’s most iconic peaks, Mt. Timpanogos! Join Outdoor Adventures for two nights in the Wasatch mountains, all food, transportation, and gear included. Alpine views, mountain goats, and a legendary climb are in store for participants of this bucket list backpacking trip. We will depart Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. and return to campus Sunday evening. One night will be at an established campground and one will be in the backcountry.
This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for outdoor novices who participate in regular fitness activity or routine. Familiarity with hiking and camping is required.

DESERT BIKEPACKING
Bike through the beautiful southern Utah desert and escape the city scene with Outdoor Adventures this weekend! We’ll see gorgeous sandstone formations and the night sky unlike in any other setting. The trip includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and meals. You are more than welcome to use your own mountain bike if you have one or utilize oa’s fleet of bikes. We will depart Friday afternoon and return to campus Sunday evening. 
This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for outdoor novices who participate in regular fitness activity or routine. Must be confident biking including on moderate uphill and downhill grades.

10/9-10/13

COYOTE GULCH FALL BREAK BACKPACKING
Make the most of your fall break with this five-day backpacking adventure. Outdoor Adventures is headed to Coyote Gulch, renowned for its remoteness, stunning scenery, and wildlife viewing. Wander ever deeper into the earth via this remote canyon and feel the world disappear behind imposing red cliffs. Be ready to get your feet wet! All meals, gear, and transportation are included along with OA’s friendly and experienced Trip Leaders. Expect to depart Monday afternoon and return to campus Friday evening. 
This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for outdoor novices who participate in regular fitness activity or routine. Participants must be familiar and enthusiastic about backcountry camping and hiking.

NORTH WASH CANYONEERING
Join OA for some introductory canyoneering in the beautiful sandstone canyons of Southern Utah. In North Wash you’ll find some of the most beautiful, exciting canyons in the state. This trip includes deep, twisting narrows, multiple rappels, and some thrilling downclimbs. This trip includes gear, instruction, transportation, and equipment. Participants should be comfortable with heights and able to hike 3-5 miles. We will depart OA at 2PM on Friday and return Sunday evening. 
This trip is rated Class 2: perfect for beginners with moderate athletic ability who are ready to get outside. Must be comfortable around heights.

10/27-10/29

11/3-11/5

MOAB CLIMBING AND YOGA
Do you like to climb on beautiful red sandstone under sunny blue skies? Do you like to connect to your surroundings and yourself through the practice of yoga? Do you like to meet new people and build community? If any of this sounds like you, then join us as we host a Moab climbing and yoga weekend! This weekend will include a multitude of climbing opportunities with the amazing scenery of Moab red rock! The trip includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and meals. Participants may bring their own climbing gear if they wish (shoes, harness, helmet) or choose to use OA’s equipment. We will depart OA at 2PM on Friday and return Sunday evening. 
This trip is classified as Class 2: Relaxed, great for those who are new to outdoor adventures and are ready to get outside.

SOUTHERN UTAH BACKPACKING
Hike through the beautiful southern Utah desert and escape the city scene with Outdoor Adventures this weekend! We’ll see gorgeous sandstone formations and the night sky unlike in any other setting. This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for active outdoor novices with a regular fitness activity or routine. We will depart OA at 9AM on Friday and return Sunday evening.

ST. GEORGE ROCK CLIMBING
Scale the stunning red cliffs of St. George on this weekend-long Outdoor Adventures trip. Trip leaders will set up and belay you on routes for any level of climber! Push yourself out of your comfort zone and be thrilled as the desert comes alive from your perch high on a rope. Then, come back to camp and relish the joys of desert camping. All gear, transportation, and meals are included in the trip cost. We will depart OA at 12PM on Friday and return Sunday evening. 
This trip is classified as Class 2: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for outdoor beginners who participate in regular fitness activity or routine. Participants should be comfortable with heights.

THANKSGIVING BREAK DESERT BACKPACKING
Looking for a break from the in-laws this Thanksgiving? Join Outdoor Adventures for a multi-day backpacking trip to stunning southern Utah! Immerse yourself in the splendor of the desert and enjoy the rhythm of self sufficiency as you wander amongst beautiful red rock formations. All meals, gear, and transportation are included, along with OA’s friendly and experienced Trip Leaders. We will depart Thursday afternoon and return to campus Sunday evening. 
This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for outdoor novices who participate in regular fitness activity or routine. Participants must be familiar and enthusiastic about backcountry camping and hiking.

ST. GEORGE MOUNTIAN BIKING
Cruise red rock bike trails on this Outdoor Adventures weekend mountain biking trip. Bring your own set of wheels or utilize one from our fleet of mountain bikes. Be absorbed in the scenery as you bike up, then drop into fast paced thrills on the way down! All meals, gear, and transportation are included, along with OA’s friendly and experienced Trip Leaders. We will meet at OA Friday at 12PM and return to campus Sunday evening. 
This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for outdoor novices who participate in regular fitness activity or routine. Must be confident biking including on moderate uphill and downhill grades.

12/8-12/10

SOUTHERN UTAH BACKPACKING
Hike through the beautiful southern Utah desert and escape the city scene with Outdoor Adventures this weekend! We’ll see gorgeous sandstone formations and the night sky unlike in any other setting. The trip includes transportation, equipment, instruction, and meals.
This trip is classified as Class 3: Moderate, meaning it is appropriate for active outdoor novices with a regular fitness activity or routine. We will depart OA at 8AM on Friday and return Sunday evening.

Our programs are available to all current University of Utah Students. These trips are not open to the General Public.

Trip costs include all the food, transportation, and group gear needed to participate in a trip. Group gear includes rafts, tents, climbing gear, etc. Personal gear, such as water bottles, clothing, sunscreen, hiking boots, etc., are the responsibility of the participant. Cooperative Adventure trips are planned and coordinated by Outdoor Adventures trip leaders. Trip costs are shared equally by all participants. All group planning, leadership and risks are shared by all participants equally. Because Outdoor Adventures trips are exciting, physically demanding, and take place in an environment over which we have no control, they can be potentially dangerous. As a participant on a Cooperative Adventure Trip, you must personally accept these conditions and assume full responsibility for your own safety and well-being. Trip size is limited, and registration plus payment is on a first come, first served basis. A non-refundable deposit is required when you sign up to secure a spot for you. Each multi-day trip has a pre-trip meeting, and your attendance is strongly recommended.

University of Utah policies prohibit alcohol, controlled substances, and firearms. These items are not permitted on any OA Adventure. Participants are not required to have health insurance, but it is strongly encouraged.

THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH SEEKS TO PROVIDE EQUAL ACCESS TO IT’S PROGRAMS, SERVICES AND ACTIVITIES TO PEOPLE OF ALL ABILITIES

Trip registrations canceled more than 14 days from the start date of the trip are eligible for a refund up to 90%. Please submit a refund request form and your refund will be processed. No full refunds will be available.

Trip registrations canceled 8-14 days before a trip are eligible for up to a 75% refund ONLY if the spot is filled from the trip waitlist. Please submit a refund request form to cancel your registration, if we successfully fill your spot, we will contact you regarding your refund.

Trip registrations canceled 7 days or less before the trip start date are not eligible for any refund. Please call the OA Office at 801-581-8516 or email Kiana Lindsay at kiana.lindsay@crs.utah.edu to cancel your trip registration.

Trip registrants who do not show up for their pre-trip meeting without contacting their trip leaders, will be removed from the trip and will not receive a refund.

If the trip is canceled by Outdoor Adventures, you will receive a full refund.
